How Your Talent Is Holding You Back From Succeeding With Your Music

As musicians we often think the path to success is simple; we just have to be better than the other person, better than the other people in line, better than the rest of the choices, and we'll make it. The truth, though it's uncomfortable, is that the less-talented guitar player is going to get hired for the session sometimes and the less-talented vocalist will get that cut.

The thing that separates you from the crowd isn't always going to be talent. Being good at your craft is a prerequisite nowadays and the way to get ahead is to put yourself out there effectively and to take control of the business that is YOU.

The people hiring musicians for remote sessions don't want an artist who needs their handheld when sending .wav files and they won't sign a contract with someone who doesn't know what a PRO is. They're going to choose the musician who has their act together!

The good news is, it's easier than ever to OWN our businesses and treat them like one! Learn what's going on behind...

Plant Many Seeds, But Don’t Watch Them Grow

I was recently notified that a song I produced and co-wrote was on hold for a Google ad! The paperwork was on the ad agency’s desk, the cat was in the bag, it was a done deal, and at the last minute, they decided to go with a big name artist instead. The payout would have been six figures. I mean, it was Google, and of course, that’s probably why they wanted to give the advertisement to an “artist” artist and not a production company.

Not gonna lie, it stung to hear that just a little bit because day-um... that was a close one! Did I cry about it? No. Did I wallow in despair for any longer than a brief second? No. Why? Because I never rely on ONE thing to move the needle in my business. Over the years I have learned that this is a NUMBERS game and you have to have multiple irons in the fire at all times!

This brings me back to a couple of years ago when my Soundbetter profile was on Fi-YA! I mean, I was booking at least 3-5 jobs a week and I got a little too...

How To STOP Caring What OTHER Producers Think!

I've had so many people in my life, along with some producer friends, EVEN BOYFRIENDS, tell me I'd never been a "real" producer. They told me to just stick to what I was good at, songwriting. Had I listened to them, if I had given in and believed them, I would never have had the confidence to put my own music out there and see what I could truly be! The truth is we have to stop letting other peoples’ opinions define us. Most of the time these people, these producers, aren't really talking about you, they're projecting their own insecurities on you to feel better about themselves. So don't take it personally and most importantly KEEP WORKING!

In this blog, I want to talk about how you can push through the fear of caring what these other ‘producers’ think!

You can do it, I believe in you!

The other day I got a DM from a fellow up-and-coming female producer. My heart ached as I read her words as they echoed my own from not long ago. She told me she wanted to be a...

Why Writer’s Block is Bull$hit

We've all been there, we've all had days where the creativity fountain just seems to stop flowing & good ideas avoid us like the plague. But what if this was something you could control?! What if it was possible to keep the fountain on all the time?!

Professional songwriters know that inspiration is the result of action; not the other way around. When you start working on something without knowing where it's heading, ideas start to pop up & say "Hey! Try me!" But If you never look for them, you'll never find them!

One great way to get moving & start hunting down a song is to start with pre-production. Create an outline or a blueprint for yourself, select some sounds, get the vibe going, outline the story you want to tell, & the beats you want to hit. The rest will follow. DO NOT sit around waiting for that magical feeling, go out & get it yourself!

I know for some of you that may be a little easier said than done but if you want to learn how I start making my...

If You Set The Intention The Path Will Unfold

Have you ever caught yourself ‘white-knuckling’ your way through life trying to make things happen a certain way? Don’t worry, we’ve all been there, especially in the music biz. I used to think the only way for me to ‘make it’ was to get a major pub deal or record deal & if I wasn’t “Beyonce Big” then I had failed. Boy was I wrong! Do you know how much money is floating around for creatives to make money outside of the “music industry?”

The truth is, I just wanted to make a great living with my music & I wanted to make an impact. Once I realized that I didn’t need to define the how or what was going to get me there, I discovered a whole new world. That world was music production & custom songwriting! What started off as a necessity because I couldn’t afford to hire producers soon became an obsession & a passion!

Learning how to produce opened doors I could have never imagined, it created...

Using Boundaries To Create Freedom As A Producer

If you’re an artist then I’m going to assume you’ve been hit by a little thing called “Blank Page Syndrome.” You know the feeling of those dreary beginning stages where you’re staring at a blank page before the actual songwriting begins or as a producer staring at a blank DAW. The options are truly limitless, do you write a love song or a party song, do you start with a loop or build a kit, maybe you want to track guitars first, list goes on & on

The fact that you can start anywhere is honestly a little too much to handle.  Especially if you have perfectionism lingering around & you’re wanting everything to be perfect straight out the gate (spoiler alert, that isn’t how great art is made.) After all, they say the best writers are re-writers?

This is a little thing called decision fatigue. When we are faced with too many options we often get overwhelmed & therefore are not able to gain clarity on our main objective....
