Watch First: The SIMPLE Method (Mini Course)

Hit play, keep your DAW open, and pause as you go. You’ll finish a 60–90 second song sketch in 2–3 hours—tonight.

  • Pro tip: Wear headphones.
  • Pace: Pause whenever you need. Each step is bite-sized.

Goal: Finished, not flawless.

Tonight’s Plan (Follow This Order)

Instrumentation (20 min): Add a drum loop/kit, bass, chords.

Mood (15 min): Lock your vibe (major/minor) and tempo.

Pre-Production (15 min): Name/save session, add markers, set levels.

Leave it behind (45 min): Mute the reference and make it yours—record.

Execute (30 min): Quick mix, bounce WAV/MP3, share with 3 friends.

Download Master Checklist

Quick Start: Tech Setup (3 mins)

  • Open your DAW (GarageBand, BandLab, Reaper, Logic, Pro Tools—any works).
  • Create tracks for Drums, Bass, Chords, Lead/Vox and name them.
  • Set input gain so nothing clips (no red).
  • Load your reference track on its own track and turn it down.

If you hear delay while recording vocals: lower buffer size in your audio settings.

How to Get an Easy Win

  • Timer on: 25 minutes.
  • Cards out: Use the Workbook (S → I → M…).
  • No rabbit holes: Built-in sounds are perfect tonight.
  • Ship it: When your first chorus feels good, move to Execute.

Stuck? Try These

  • Feeling muddy? Do Quick Win #2 (Vocal mud sweep 200–400 Hz) and #3 (High-pass non-bass).
  • Can’t hear the vocal? Quick Win #7 (tiny volume rides during phrases).
  • Sounds great on headphones, not elsewhere? Quick Win #4 (Mono Balance) + #10 (Phone/Car check).
  • Lost in the arrangement? Re-do the Song Map, then mute the reference and continue.

Celebrate + Share

Export WAV + MP3 (Limiter ceiling at –1.0 dB; avoid clipping).

Use the “First Share” script inside the Master Checklist to DM 3 trusted friends tonight. Momentum > perfection.

Tech FAQ: Quick Fixes for Common DAW Issues

1️⃣ My vocals sound delayed or “echoey” when I record.

That’s latency — totally normal and easy to fix.

  • Go to Preferences → Audio → Buffer Size (or similar in your DAW).
  • Set it between 64–128 samples while recording.
  • After recording, switch back to 512+ samples for mixing (reduces clicks or CPU issues).

2️⃣ My mic isn’t recording anything.

Check your input settings:

  • Go to Preferences → Audio → Input Device.
  • Make sure your mic or interface is selected (not “Built-In Mic” unless that’s what you’re using).
  • Arm the track for recording (usually a red circle button).
  • If you still don’t see a signal, try restarting your DAW with the mic plugged in first.

3️⃣ I hear nothing when I hit play.

Check your Output Device.

  • Go to Preferences → Audio → Output Device.
  • Select your headphones, interface, or speakers.
  • Make sure the track isn’t muted or soloed incorrectly.

Try toggling the master mute button off/on.

4️⃣ My recording clips or distorts.

You’re recording too hot.

  • Watch for red lights — that means clipping.
  • Turn down your input gain on your interface or inside the DAW until levels peak around -6 dB.
  • Leave plenty of headroom — louder isn’t better when recording.

5️⃣ How do I export my finished song?

Use the included Bounce, Master & Share Toolkit, but here’s the quick version:

  • Highlight your entire song.
  • Go to File → Bounce → Project or Section (or Export).
  • Export as WAV (24-bit) and MP3 (for sharing).
  • Set limiter output to -1.0 dB and check there’s no clipping.

6️⃣ Why does my song sound different on my phone or in the car?

That’s normal! Small speakers exaggerate mids and lose bass.

  • Use Quick Win #10 – Phone + Car Reality Check to calibrate.
  • Make one small fix (balance, EQ, or reverb), then stop — done beats perfect.

7️⃣ GarageBand or BandLab keeps freezing.

You’re probably running out of computer resources.

  • Close browser tabs and background apps.
  • Freeze or bounce heavy tracks to audio.

Save and restart your DAW every hour to refresh RAM.

8️⃣ Do I need to download plugins to follow along?

No third-party plugins required.
